CINCINNATI, Ohio — For the first time in 99 years, Ohio State beat Cincinnati in a basketball game on the Bearcats’ court as the Buckeyes captured a 64-56 victory in their season opener.
This one started off very slowly as the two teams combined for 2-17 shooting through the first five minutes of the game.
The game would not pick up offensively for either team in the first half, but Ohio State was fantastic defensively as they held Cincinnati to just 4-29 shooting from the field for the first half as the Buckeyes took a 27-18 lead at halftime.
The Buckeyes came out firing offensively in the second half as they made their first four shots coming out of the break to take a commanding 38-22 lead, their first double-digit lead of the season.
After Ohio State built up a 41-25 lead, Cincinnati made a bit of a push as a couple Buckeye turnovers and a 7-0 run by the Bearcats cut the lead to 41-32.
Ohio State managed to weather the Cincinnati storm as the two teams traded baskets for a few possessions with Ohio State taking a 46-34 lead with under eight minutes to go in the game.
Cincinnati came roaring back towards the end of the game as they cut Ohio State’s lead to just 60-56 with 59.5 seconds to go, but a layup by C.J. Jackson with 29 seconds left in the game would all but seal the victory for Ohio State as the Buckeyes would go on to win 64-56 after a pair of made free throws by Jackson.
Sophomore forward Kaleb Wesson led the way for the Buckeyes in their victory with 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Sophomore forward Kyle Young set a new career-high for himself with ten points and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Freshman guard Luther Muhammad had a solid performance in his Ohio State debut as he totaled eleven points on 4-10 shooting.
It was Ohio State’s defensive play that won the game for the Buckeyes as they held Cincinnati to just 27% shooting from the field.
Ohio State will now head back to Columbus for their home opener this Sunday, November 11th to face Fort Wayne-Purdue. Tip-off on Sunday is scheduled for 4:00pm ET.
