COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State continued their shockingly great start of the 2018-19 basketball season on Sunday with a 107-61 throttling of Purdue Fort Wayne to move to 2-0 on the season.
Purdue Fort Wayne came out with lots of energy and lights out shooting as they took a 16-13 lead six minutes into the game, but Ohio State managed to weather the storm shortly after that as the Mastadons missed five shots in a row while the Buckeyes took a 27-18 lead with 7:27 remaining in the first half.
The Mastadons came charging back though as they cut the Ohio State lead to 33-31 with 2:59 to go in the half, but the Buckeyes managed to pull away a bit in the final minutes of the first half as Ohio State took a 41-34 lead into halftime, but not before PFW guard John Konchar made a layup at the buzzer.
Ohio State junior forward Andre Wesson was helped off the court and to the locker room with a lower back strain in the first half but returned to the Buckeye bench at the start of the second half and reentered the game.
Ohio State came out and built on their lead in the second half as they built their lead up to a staggering 60-41 with 12:38 to go in the game.
The onslaught would continue throughout the rest of the game as the Buckeyes ran away with this one, 107-61.
The loudest the crowd got in this game was when senior benchwarmer and founder of the #TowelGang Joey Lane came in with a little over five minutes left and scored five points on 2-2 shooting, one of his shots a fade away three which sent the crowd into a frenzy. Lane also tallied two rebounds and two assists.
Senior guard C.J. Jackson was on fire for the Buckeyes on Sunday as he rattled off a career-high 25 points against the Mastadons while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists.
It was all about the freshman on Sunday as freshman guard Duane Washington Jr. had a stellar showing on Sunday as well as he recorded 20 points on 7-11 shooting as well as a very nice 6-9 shooting from three-point range while freshman guard Luther Muhammad tallied 12 points and freshman forward Jaedon LeDee scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Ohio State will now hit the road this week for a tough road matchup with Creighton on Thursday. Tip-off this Thursday, November 15th is scheduled for 7:00pm ET and the game will be televised on FS1.
