Ohio State Gets Marquee Win With 90-70 Blowout Of No. 22 Iowa

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State has been searching for a marquee win for a long time now, but they finally got it as they blew out No. 22 Iowa at home on Tuesday night behind a career night for freshman Justin Ahrens.

Game Recap

It was a slow start for the Buckeyes as Iowa jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, but Ohio State quickly tied the game at seven out of the first media timeout.

The Buckeyes managed to build up a 22-16 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first half, but the Hawkeyes would come back to claim a six-point lead of their own on a 15-3 run to take a 31-25 lead with 3:47 to go until halftime.

However, Ohio State went into halftime with the lead as Iowa trailed 36-33 after the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, Ohio State started to light it up from three-point range as emerging freshman phenom Justin Ahrens helped the Buckeyes build up an 18-point lead of 74-56 with 8:41 to go in the game.

Ultimately, the Buckeyes went on to win the game, knocking off the No. 22 Hawkeyes, 90-70.

Final Stats

It was all about Justin Ahrens in the second half between Ohio State and Iowa as the emerging freshman phenom shattered his previous career-high scoring performance of nine points against Maryland by posting 25 points just in the second half and 29 total for the night.

Ahrens emerged in the second half, but freshman guard Duane Washington Jr. gave the Buckeyes some much-needed scoring in the first half with ten points before halftime.

Sophomore big man Kaleb Wesson was the glue of the team, as always, as he finished the night with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

It was a rough start for Ohio State from three-point range as they went 0-8 from deep to open the game, but the Buckeyes got hot in the second half and finished 12-32 from behind the arc. That makes 50% shooting from three following the 0-8 start.

With the victory, Ohio State moves to 18-10 on the season and 8-9 in Big Ten conference play.

The Buckeyes will be back in action this Saturday, March 2nd as they take on Purdue in West Lafayette. Tip-off on Saturday is scheduled for 2:00pm and the game will be televised on ESPN.
