COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football will hold its annual spring game this Saturday, April 13th and the team will be hosting a very special guest as well as former Buckeye and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George will be on the sidelines at Ohio Stadium as the honorary captain for the game.
“The team is thrilled to have Eddie George back in Ohio Stadium with them,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said Friday morning in a statement released by the university. “This coaching staff is thrilled, as well. He is a tremendous representative of this school and this program and we are certainly honored that he’ll be able to take part in this spring game weekend.”
George played for Ohio State from 1992 to 1995, and in that time he cemented himself as one of the greatest players in Buckeye history.
George became the Buckeyes’ sixth player in program history to win the Heisman Trophy back in 1995 as he rushed for what is still an Ohio State single-season record 1,927 yards and also still holds the school record for most rushing yards in a single game with this 314 yards against Illinois in his Heisman-winning season.
George cleaned up that season in the awards department as he also won the Doak Walker Award, the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Player Of The Year and, of course, Big Ten MVP.
George would go on to be a first-round draft pick in the 1996 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers and went on to win NFL Rookie Of The Year in his first season in the league.
Over the course of nine seasons with two separate franchises (Oilers/Titans, Cowboys) in the NFL, George rushed for a total of 10,441 yards, which ranks 28th in NFL history to this day.
George was inducted into the College Football Hall Of Fame in 2011 and he is now an actor, speaker and entrepreneur. He even owns a restaurant right here in Columbus rightfully named Eddie George’s Grille 27.
The Ohio State football spring game will kick off tomorrow, Saturday, April 13th at noon ET at Ohio Stadium and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
Fans wanting to attend the spring game can still get tickets here.
